Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav To Lead India

The countdown to the Asia Cup 2025 (September 9-28, UAE) has begun, and Team India’s preparations are entering the final stretch. According to reports, the Indian T20I squad will be announced on August 19 in Mumbai during a selection committee meeting chaired by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, followed by a press conference.

Current T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav is set to continue leading the side. Despite undergoing sports hernia surgery earlier this year, Suryakumar has resumed batting in the nets at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. While he still needs about a week for full match fitness, his return to leadership appears certain.

The selection puzzle has created ripples. Shubman Gill, despite scoring heavily in England last year, may struggle to find a place in the T20 squad. Sources suggest that selectors are keen to persist with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as the opening pair.

Similarly, Yashasvi Jaiswal fresh from outstanding Test series performances in Australia. And England along with Shreyas Iyer may miss out. With selectors advising them to focus on red-ball cricket and the Asia Cup 2025.

However, there is still a glimmer of hope for Shreyas Iyer, who recently cleared his fitness tests at the NCA. Making him a potential contender for a late inclusion.

Suryakumar, who has 1,107 T20I runs at an average of 36.90 and a strike rate of 161.13. Faces the challenge of reviving his international form after a dip post-T20 World Cup triumph. With young guns like Tilak Varma, Samson, and Abhishek Sharma pushing for places, competition for top-order slots is intense.
